Job Description

The Department of Astronomy seeks to appoint a full-time academic at the Lecturer level. Applications are sought from scientists whose research interests lie in Extragalactic Multi-Wavelength Astronomy. Preference will be given to applicants whose research interests include radio/HI observations of galaxies and complement or include existing extragalactic research programmes within the department. The department has close links with the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) and the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) and the successful candidate will have access to MeerKAT through Open Time calls, collaborative programmes within existing MeerKAT Large Survey Projects, the South African share on SALT, and telescopes of the SAAO.
The department also has a well-established undergraduate major in astrophysics and hosts one of the nodes of the postgraduate National Astrophysics and Space Science Programme (NASSP). The successful candidate will be expected to contribute towards the teaching portfolio of the department.
Requirements: A PhD in astronomy or related discipline; a record of research in observational astronomy.
Responsibilities: Teaching of courses at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels; develop own research; supervision of postgraduate students.
