Job Description

The I. Physikalische Institut, Uni Koeln, specializes in the field of Astrophysics with a focus on submm/far-infrared astronomy. We develop heterodyne instruments, which are used at world-class telescopes like SOFIA (https://www.sofia.usra.edu/) and the future CCAT-prime (http://www.ccatobservatory.org/). In addition to instrument building we also specialize in the calibration, reduction and interpretation of the data returned from our instruments. We are in the process to build a mature data pipeline and archive and are seeking a PostDoc that will help us with this task.

YOUR TASKS
»You will improve, maintain and extend our calibration routines, reduction pipeline and data archive
»Investigate and implement algorithms that quantify data quality (using machine learning techniques)
»Astronomical interpretation/classification of data
»Develop web tools to display archive content

YOUR PROFILE
»You have a PhD in astronomy or physics with a solid knowledge of radioastronomical principles (heterodyne instruments, calibration of radioastronomical data)
»Thorough hands-on experience in reduction and analysis of radioastronomical data. Preferentially you have already experience with GILDAS.
»Solid knowledge of python. Additional knowledge of C++, Fortran, Javascript, web development would be an asset.
»Open to learning new programming languages and software frameworks

The position is available from now on on a full -time basis. It is limited to two years. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary is based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the pay scale for the German public sector.
