Job Description

NAOJ invites applications for a Project Associate Professor in NAOJ ALMA Project to work as Instrument Scientist in the EA-ARC.

This position is for a Scientist with a deep knowledge in radio astronomy and interferometry who can contribute to the establishment of new observation capabilities for the ALMA telescope, and can contribute to NAOJ and ALMA-wide development planning for ALMA. The successful candidate is expected to work in international working groups together with engineers and scientist from all ALMA regions, and to provide timely input to the EA-ALMA Project Manager and the EA-ARC Manager. He/she is also expected to contribute to studies leading to the establishment of new observation capabilities of ALMA in close communication with EA-ARC staff, NAOJ staff working in JAO, and counterparts in ESO, NRAO and JAO. For these tasks, the successful candidate is expected to travel abroad often, and to contribute actively to JAO commissioning from the EA-ARC or locally in Chile. In addition, he/she is expected to work closely with the EA-ALMA Project Scientist to collect the requests for development of new observation capabilities from the East Asia radio astronomy community.

This Instrument Scientist will assign 60% of his/her working time for the above duties. In addition, he/she will assign 15% of his/her time for ARC duty as a team member of the EA-ARC. The Science Operations tasks conducted by the team include:

-Support of preparation of ALMA observations or evaluation/reduction of the observed ALMA data;
-Promotion of science with ALMA by contributions at science meetings and ALMA East Asian Users Meeting;

Finally, the remaining 25% of his/her working time shall be used for his/her own scientific research such as:
-Excellent scientific research with ALMA;
-Exploration of new research fields with ALMA.

Division and Location: NAOJ ALMA Project, EA-ARC, Mitaka (Tokyo, Japan)

Term of employment: 5 years. Annual performance review will be conducted. In case that the successful candidate was an NINS employee after 2013 April 1, the term may be set so that the total accumulated terms of the employment does not exceed ten years.
