Job Description

High-Energy Physics Postdoctoral Scholar - 84554

Organization: CR-Computational Research

Berkeley Lab’s Computational Research Division (https://cs.lbl.gov/about/divisions-and-facilities/computational-research/) has an opening for a High-Energy Physics Postdoctoral Scholar. You will conduct applied research and development in the area of high-performance scientific computing (HPC) for cosmic frontier experiments with a focus on the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope’s Dark Energy Science Collaboration (http://lsst-desc.org/). This position is part of a larger effort to enable path breaking data-intensive science with NERSC's next generation manycore supercomputer, the Cray KNL-based "Cori" system (https://www.nersc.gov/users/computational-systems/cori/) and also part of a cross-lab HEP Center of Computational Excellence (http://www.hepcce.org/).

In this role, you will enable critical computing for fundamental physics to be conducted on one of the world’s largest supercomputers, and so will gain experience of cutting edge computing hardware and systems, as well as ‘Big Data’ technologies and tools, operating at extreme-scales. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team of computational scientists and astrophysicists, working to enable the use of energy-efficient, high-performance computing systems by the experimental high-energy physics community.

What You Will Do:

• Analysis and optimization of applications for LSST DESC.

• I/O benchmarking and optimization, data management, including data reduction and compression.

• Implementation of parallel and scalable workflows on HPC systems.

• The optimization of data transfer over wide-area networks.

• I/O benchmarking and enhancements capitalizing on NERSC’s recently acquired petabyte-sized NVRAM filesystem.

• Scalable workflows and software deployment on HPC for HEP.

• New applications of machine learning to HEP.

• Analysis and optimization of parallel applications for HEP.

• Disseminate results of research activities through refereed publications and conference presentations and to ensure that new methods are suitably documented for the wider Astrophysics community, NERSC staff, vendors, and other NERSC users.

• May involve travel to sites at other labs and universities.

• Experienced NERSC Big Data architects and LBNL astrophysicists will mentor the appointee.

What Is Required:

• Ph.D. in Cosmology, Astrophysics, High-Energy Physics, Computational Science, Computer Science, Applied Math or an equivalent/related field.

• Research experience and knowledge in computing and/or code development ideally for Cosmology or HPC is required, including significant experience with python, C, and C++.

• Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work productively both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team balancing divergent objectives involving research, code development, and optimization for next-generation HPC hardware and storage systems.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on March 15, 2018.

Notes:

• This is a full time 1 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

• Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

• This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

• Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

• This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

• Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
