Canada France Hawaii Telescope Corporation (CFHT) operates a world-class 3.6-meter telescope at the summit of Maunakea. We are seeking a talented and inspirational leader with a strong engineering background to lead a small and multidisciplinary Operations Team. The team is responsible for all aspects of the operation, maintenance and systems upgrades of the telescope, drive and control system, dome, and telescope support infrastructure at the observatory. The person in this role works closely with other science and engineering groups to ensure that the scientific community is provided with the highest level and quality of scientific output.
Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Operations Manager plans and supervises all activities of the Operations Group, with budgetary responsibility for the group. As a seasoned Engineer, the Operations Manager has technical responsibility for operations, maintenance and technical upgrades of the many mechanical and electrical systems that comprise the observatory. As a member of the Observatory Council, the manager advises the Executive Group on staff and technical issues; and facilitates communication between the Council, the Executive, and team members.

We are particularly interested in leaders with a strong hands-on engineering background and project management experience in mechanics, electronics, or optics. Furthermore, previous astronomical observatory, scientific lab, or aerospace experience would be a strong plus. Experience using advanced analytics and a systems approach to increase productivity and reduce downtime would also be a strong plus.
The Operations Manager is based at CFHT Headquarters in beautiful Waimea on Hawaii Island. The position requires frequent trips to the summit and is on-call for observatory support nights and weekends as needed.
