Job Description

Assistant Professor with a primary focus on teaching and education management

Leiden Observatory is one of the largest academic astronomy departments in the world. Besides an active research program, the ‘Sterrewacht’ has the responsibility for teaching some 350 students in its bachelor and master programmes of Astronomy. Starting this Autumn, we have an opening for a permanent position at the level of an Assistant Professor (Universitair Docent) with a primary focus on teaching. 80% of this full-time position involves teaching and management support of the director of studies. This includes taking care of 6-9 EC lecturing/semester, active involvement in educational committees and education management support.

Candidates who apply have obtained a PhD in astronomy with a strong track record in research at the postdoctoral level. They have demonstrated experience in teaching (evidenced by good teaching evaluations) and are in the possession of a University Teaching Qualification (BKO). They have excellent communication and organization skills, speak Dutch or are willing to learn Dutch within the timeframe of one year. Familiarity with the Dutch educational system is an advantage

We offer a full-time permanent position (starting with one year probation).

To apply for this vacancy, please send an email to [email protected] with the following attachments: your application letter with motivation, your academic CV, two pages teaching portfolio with clear information on previous and present teaching experience and summarizing your view on how academic teaching (in astronomy) should develop. Add your teaching evaluation and BKO (or equivalent). Please mention the contact information of at least two persons willing to provide a letter of recommendation.

Enquiries can be made to Prof. dr. H.V.J. Linnartz, Director of Studies at Leiden Observatory ([email protected]). If you have any questions about the procedure, please contact our educational office ([email protected]).

Leiden University is strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from members of underrepresented groups.

Only applications sent before July 1st, 2021 will be considered.
