Announcement
Job Announcement Text:

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position in extragalactic astrophysics at Caltech/IPAC. You will work with Dr. Olivier Doré  and Daniel Masters, and the SPHEREx Science Team to develop the redshift and simulation pipeline for the SPHEREx mission (http://spherex.caltech.edu).  SPHEREx is a Medium Explorer (MIDEX) NASA mission that will perform the first all-sky spectral survey from 0.75-5 micron, with an expected launch in 2024. The primary science goals of SPHEREx are constraining the physics of inflation from the large-scale 3D distribution of galaxies, measuring water and biogenic ices around stars in an early stage of formation in our galaxy, and mapping the integrated light of galaxies across cosmic time.

You will help develop the simulations, techniques and software required to measure galaxy redshifts from the SPHEREx spectra at the level required to make the sensitive cosmological measurements of primordial non-Gaussianity.  You will also get involved in generating realistic mock observations relying on large cosmological simulations.  You will also be encouraged to use a fraction of your time for independent research and will have access to observing facilities including Palomar.

Qualifications and Experience

By the starting date (~September 2021, but earlier dates are possible), a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics or equivalent, in an area relevant to the responsibilities.

Prior research experience with space and/or ground-based imaging data, and in extragalactic astronomy or star formation is highly desirable, as is experience with machine learning and data analysis techniques. Experience with effectively working in a team environment is preferred.

Appointment Details

This appointment is for two years, and an additional year is possible contingent on performance and funding availability.

Applications are due by January 19, 2021 and should be directed to olivier.dore@caltech.edu and dmasters@ipac.caltech.edu

Applications only accepted via email.

Required Documents

  • A brief cover letter describing your interest in the position
  • Curriculum vitae
