Job Description

The Department of Physics seeks to appoint a Research Fellow to work in the Astronomy and Astrophysics group in the field of astrophysical transients and related time-domain science. The initial appointment will run until Sept 2024, with possibility for extension.

The fellow will work with Dr. Joe Lyman as part of the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship “New frontiers in transient astrophysics: gravitational-wave multi-messenger events and exotic stellar explosions”. They will work on the study of extra-galactic transients, including rapid follow-up and characterisation of discoveries by the Gravitational wave Optical Transient Observer (GOTO; https://goto-observatory.org) project. The successful applicant will help create a network of automated GOTO follow-up with facilities, including membership of the NOT Transient Explorer collaboration (https://nte.nbi.ku.dk/).

Applicants must hold or be about to attain a PhD in astrophysics and have a proven/developing research track record. The ideal candidate will hold strong software development skills, and be capable of working effectively independently and as part of a team. Experience in observational astronomy and/or automated data analysis is strongly desired. Time will be available for independent research.
