Job Description

The U. Catolica branch of the Center for Astrophysics and Related Technologies (CATA) based in the Institute of Astrophysics of Pontificia Universidad Catolica (IA-PUC) and the Center of Astro-Engineering of the Universidad Catolica (AIUC) invites applications for up to three postdoctoral research fellowships in the areas of observational and computational extragalactic astrophysics to work either on existing projects or in close collaboration with the PIs of the CATA-UC project, Profs. Felipe Barrientos, Nelson Padilla, and Ezequiel Treister and their research groups.

Specifically, the research interests of the candidate should match broadly one of the following areas:

The Cosmology and Galaxy Formation group works on analysis of simulations of modified gravity, with and without baryons, to design tests that can be applicable to current and future surveys; on the development of the GALFORM semi-analytic model, or analyses of HOD and SHAM with semi-analytic runs on simulations of the Virgo Consortium.  It is a possibility to become a full member of SDSS-IV to make cosmological constraints/gravity tests using eBOSS, or galaxy formation studies using MANGA. The IA-PUC/AIUC hosts two supercomputers and a GPU cluster for numerical simulations, large databases, and data analysis. We have access to external supercomputers via our international collaborations.

The Large Scale Structure group includes the analysis and exploitation of large imaging optical surveys such as ATLAS and its Chilean extension in the u-band (UVAS), of particular interests are the  identification of QSOs and strong lensing clusters for follow up studies. Some of these are mapping the SFR and gas component of the highly magnified galaxies using ALMA as well as the studying the gaseous galaxy halos of the intermediate galaxy population using the background arcs (see http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2018Natur.554..493L).

The AGN group at PUC focuses on multiwavelength studies of local and high redshift AGN and their host galaxies. Specifically, we are now carrying out ambitious ALMA studies of z>3 AGN, nearby ULIRGs in the GOALS sample and PG Quasars. We are obtaining optical and near-IR IFU observations of nearby dual AGN as part of the MODA survey and are active members of the BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS), the NuSTAR science team and the Accretion History of AGN (AHA)  collaboration.

Applicants should submit by email and in pdf format to Prof. Ezequiel Treister the following documents by the application deadline: a brief cover letter; CV; publication list; research summary (max. three pages) describing past projects and selected project, and the names of three people willing to write letters of recommendation upon request.

Applicants can find useful information regarding salary, benefits, working, and living conditions for new postdocs here.

IA-PUC and AIUC are committed to equal opportunity and diversity in its workforce. Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.
