DESY is one of the world’s leading research centres for photon science, particle and astroparticle physics as well as accelerator physics.
The astroparticle theory group currently has interests in the physics of cosmic accelerators, the propagation of cosmic messengers, neutrino physics and plasma physics. Astroparticle physics is a young research field at the intersection of particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. DESY Zeuthen is among the leading institutions in astroparticle physics with a focus on gamma-ray and neutrino astronomy as well as astroparticle theory. DESY offers excellent research opportunities in astroparticle physics through close cooperation with many research groups and major institutions in this field in Germany and abroad. The successful candidate will start in a multi-disciplinary working group at the interface between particle physics and astrophysics funded by the EU research program Horizon 2020 with the ERC grant neutrinos and the origin of the cosmic rays.
We are particularly interested in scientists working in one of the following areas:
- Propagation of cosmic radiation (cosmic rays, neutrinos, gamma-rays)
- Non-thermal sources: radiation modelling
- Multi-messenger astrophysics
- Neutrino physics
- Ph.D. in theoretical physics or astrophysics
- Experience in at least one of the research areas indicated above
- Excellent communication skills and knowledge of English
- Very good teamwork abilities
- Openness to approach new problems in frontier research
For further information please contact Walter Winter (email@example.com).
The position is limited for three years, starting around autumn 2018.
Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organisations in Germany. Classification is based upon qualifications and assigned duties. Handicapped persons will be given preference to other equally qualified applicants. DESY operates flexible work schemes. DESY is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and encourages applications from women. Vacant positions at DESY are in general open to part-time work. During each application procedure DESY will assess whether the position can be filled with part-time employees.
