Job Description

We invite applications for a postdoctoral research position at the University of Alabama, Huntsville to work with Professor Sukanya Chakrabarti on the emerging new field of "real-time" Galactic dynamics to carry out time-series precision measurements of Galactic accelerations to constrain the dark matter distribution in the Galaxy.  The successful candidate will have expertise in one (or more) of these areas: 1) transit timing and analysis of light curves of eclipsing binaries (to analyze data from Kepler, TESS, HST and JWST), 2) analysis of pulsar timing data, 3) analysis of extreme precision radial velocity observations (to analyze data from ESPRESSO).   Candidates with expertise in Galactic dynamics are also encouraged to apply.  The applicant should have obtained a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field by the date of hire.  Expertise in analysis of large data sets and in software development are preferred qualifications.   The successful candidate will work with a multi-disciplinary group of researchers with expertise ranging from traditional Galactic dynamics, pulsar timing, precision photometry, and precision radial velocity analysis.  The candidate will also be encouraged to pursue original research within the scope of these projects.

The initial appointment is for two years, and can be renewed for a third year pending satisfactory performance.  To apply, please submit a CV, cover letter, and research statement to [email protected].  Please have three letters of recommendation sent to this email as well.
