A postdoctoral research position in the fields of extrasolar planets and variable stars is open for applicants at the Konkoly Observatory. The Observatory has gone through a substantial expansion in recent years with several successful grant (e.g., ERC) recipients, research field expansion and increasing multicultural atmosphere.
The position covers the important duty of supervising and administrating the 4 servers at Konkoly and conduct self sustained, as well as collaborative and most importantly productive research. The project is pursued with the HATNet team (https://hatnet.org/), involving affiliates in the US.
Familiarity (or the ability for a quick acquaintance) with Supermicro-type servers is a must. Knowledge in computer science (including hardware) is a plus. Basic and higher level of professionality in programming languages (e.g., python, C, Fortran, Linux shell scripting) is taken as a natural attribute of the candidate. Knowledge in the field of astronomy is desirable but strong applicants from any area (e.g., from engineering, mathematics, physics) will also be considered.
Although the applicant will work under the supervision of Geza Kovacs, and expected to collaborate with other members of the team, the actual research to be performed could be quite broad both in its topic and the individuals involved. The contract is for one year, but renewable for 2 more years, depending on mutual satisfaction with heavy weight put on the productivity of the applicant. Talented pre-doctoral candidates are also considered.
Starting date: October 1, 2019. Salary: 330000 HUF, plus travel support. Application material (e-mailed to Geza Kovacs): cover letter, CV, two letters of reference (sent separately by the recommending individuals).
