Visiting Assistant Professor in Physics (all fields) at Case Western Reserve University | College of Arts and Sciences | Department of Physics

Description

Case Western Reserve University Department of Physics seeks candidates possessing outstanding records of innovative research and a commitment to high-quality teaching at all levels for two Visiting Assistant Professor positions, targeted to begin August 2022. The successful candidates will interact with theoretical, experimental and observational faculty, research staff and students in the Department of Physics, and will be strongly encouraged to extend those interactions to colleagues in other departments individually and through existing interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary structures.

The department has three strategic thrust areas: biophysics/imaging/soft matter, particle astrophysics and cosmology, and quantum materials and devices. Candidates conducting theoretical, computational, or experimental research in any of those areas will be considered. Candidates complementing the department’s strategic initiative in physics AI are particularly encouraged.

The department has a twenty-year track record of appointing and supporting VAPs who then take up tenure track positions at research universities. Responsibilities include conducting a vigorous program of innovative research, interacting and collaborating with graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, and teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level. The standard teaching load is one course plus up to two recitations or two courses per semester during the academic year, with no teaching expected during the summer.

The department is working vigorously to increase and support diversity among its faculty and students, including as an American Physical Society Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Alliance Network institution and an APS-Bridge Partner Institution, and particularly encourages and welcomes applications from candidates who would advance that effort. Applicants are asked to submit a “diversity statement” explaining how they value diversity, equity, and inclusion within their research and discipline(s) and how their own scholarly work might contribute to structural justice inside and outside institutions of higher learning. This statement should also suggest how the candidate’s work, while as a member of Case Western Reserve University, will contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and how moving forward they intend to foster a culture of diversity, pluralism, and individual difference.

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position include a Ph.D. or equivalent in physics or a closely related discipline, as well as a record of outstanding scholarly research appropriate to the level of the position. Candidates must have a record of high-quality teaching or a strong interest in teaching and possess the skills needed to be an effective instructor. The appointment will be for one year and renewable for one additional year. Information about our department is available on the website http://physics.case.edu.

Case Western Reserve University strives to maintain a diverse and inclusive work environment. All applicants are protected under Federal law from discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age and genetics.
