Job Announcement Text:

Armagh Observatory and Planetarium (AOP) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Extragalactic Astronomy. The successful applicant will work within the Fornax3D project of Dr Marc Sarzi, which is based on MUSE integral-field observations of galaxies in the Fornax galaxy cluster and is broadly aimed at understanding the formation early-type galaxies in relation to their late-type counterparts and the impact of galactic environment. Specific goals of the research assistant include the characterisation of the stellar age and chemistry distribution of the embedded stellar disks or stellar halos of early-type galaxies, the reconstruction of the star-formation history of late-type galaxies in Fornax, or the interpretation of these and other observational results in light of predictions from cosmological simulations. As such, experience with integral-field spectroscopic data, the modelling of unresolved stellar population or in the analysis of numerical simulations will be desirable.

AOP delivers internationally recognised research in astronomy and related sciences and vibrant educational and outreach programmes for all ages. Its research staff work on a range of topics, from the study of our Sun and Solar System to distant galaxies, has access to all UK national observing facilities, including ESO, ALMA and ESA, and participate in several international projects such as GOTO, SALT, I-LOFAR and CTA.

This is a 2-year fixed-term position funded by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). Applicants should have or be expected to shortly obtain a PhD in astrophysics with a strong research record. The position will commence on 1 April 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Full details of the post are available via our website at

Applicants should submit a single PDF file that includes a letter of motivation (maximum one page), a curriculum vitae (with a list of publications and presentations), and a statement of research interests (maximum of two pages) to by Friday 13th March 2020 @ 1600hrs. Applicants should also arrange for 3 letters of recommendation to be emailed to by the same deadline.

Informal enquiries about the position are welcome to Dr Marc Sarzi (, whereas more information on the Fornax3D project can be obtained at
