Job Description

We seek a Full Professor/Professor to act as a scientific leader within the Chalmers Group for Advanced Receiver Development (GARD). You will be joining an acknowledged world-class group both in developing new quantum heterodyne detectors for mm/radio astronomy and delivering full receiver systems containing these detectors to major international radio telescope projects. GARD is currently developing frontier technology which positions it to be a major future contributor to upgrades to ALMA, EHT, future space missions and SKA, giving you the prospect of leading Swedish instrumentation deliveries to these projects. The position offers an outstanding working environment including close access to Chalmers state-of-the-art Nanofabrication Laboratory, workshop facilities and membership of a broad and creative local academic network of applied quantum physics researchers and astronomers. The position comes with allocated funding for a competitive startup package.

About the position
You will be expected to take a leading scientific and strategic role within the GARD group. This role will include executing your own world-leading fundamental research in developing quantum devices for radio/mm astronomy in collaboration with other group members. Additionally, you will work with the GARD group in developing operational detectors and receiver systems for delivery to major international radio telescope projects. Involvement in long range strategic planning in matching research possibilities in quantum electronics to the future needs of radio and millimetre astronomy is highly desirable. Involvement in undergraduate teaching and the supervision of research students are central responsibilities of this faculty position.

Qualifications
You have extensive research experience in developing quantum electronics for millimetre astronomy heterodyne applications. You also have an excellent track record of innovation in relevant instrumentation as documented by the delivery of operational devices/receivers and by academic publications. It is highly desired to have demonstrated the ability to lead a team towards the delivery of complex receiver systems to international astronomy projects. Meritorious for the position is wide knowledge and interest in radio astronomy instrumentation and knowledge of the astronomical end-use of the technology. Previous experience in PhD student supervision, teaching and communicating science, together with enthusiasm for teaching within a university setting, are requirements for the position. For this reason, we place a great deal of emphasis on your pedagogical portfolio. It is meritorious to have a record working for equality and diversity within the workplace.

You must have been educated in higher education pedagogy in accordance with SUHF’s recommendations (REK 2016:1) or equivalent education, a total of at least 10 weeks of full-time study (400 hours/15 higher education credits). Exceptions may be made for external recruitment, but you are then required to undergo education in higher education pedagogy comprising at least 10 weeks of full-time study during the first two years of employment.

This position is advertised at Full Professor or Professor level. The selected level of the position will be decided based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. For a definition of the academic level for the two positions, as well as the specific qualifications expected for each position, please consult our Rules of Procedure – Chalmers University of Technology's Appointment Regulations for Teaching and Research Faculty. Full professor section 6.1, Professor section 6.2. Your qualifications and academic level will be evaluated by the department, Chalmers Faculty Appointment Committee and external scientific and pedagogical evaluators.
