Job Description

The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics of The Pennsylvania State University has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to work with Dr. Joel Leja to perform spectrophotometric modeling of large samples of early-universe galaxies in Cycle 1 JWST data.

A PhD in Physics, Astronomy, or a closely related field is required. The position will focus on the Cycle 1 UNCOVER program, a 68 hour program obtaining deep JWST NIRCam/NIRSpec imaging and spectroscopy of high-redshift galaxies in the Frontier Fields focusing on finding First Light galaxies at z>10 and performing stellar mass-complete population studies out to z=10. The successful candidate will work with a large international team of researchers. They will perform physical parameter inference using a custom high-dimensional galaxy physical model, prepare and validate the public catalog of inferred physical parameters, and perform analysis on the catalogs to determine the rate and process of galaxy formation and assembly in the high-redshift universe.

Previous experience with galaxy spectral energy distribution fitting and analysis of large cosmic surveys is desirable. Experience with analysis of space-based imaging and spectroscopy is also desirable. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Information regarding benefits may be found at https://www.research.psu.edu/opa/benefits.

The successful candidate will join the vibrant and large research community at Penn State, including over 60 faculty and faculty affiliates and nearly 50 graduate students. They will benefit from interactions with the Center for Astrostatistics, the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences, and the Institute for Gravitation and the Cosmos, and will have access to the the Roar supercomputing facility.

Applications must be submitted electronically and include a single PDF file containing a CV, cover letter, and statement of research interests. In addition, please arrange for three reference letters to be sent to [email protected]. Applications will be reviewed beginning January 1, 2022 and will be accepted until the position is filled. This is a limited-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with possibility of renewal for up to three years.
