Applications are invited for a 3-yr DFG-funded postdoctoral position related to the Stella Open Cluster Survey, an ongoing survey performed with the STELLA robotic observatory in Tenerife. The applicant would play a leading role in planning, deriving, interpreting, and publishing the resulting cool star rotation periods, and in various associated science questions. The postdoc would work with Dr. Sydney Barnes, and would belong to the Stellar Activity group at the AIP, while also enjoying significant academic freedom to pursue his/her own scientific development, including access to considerable additional observational and computational resources at AIP. We encourage applications from scientists with broad interests in cool star and stellar activity research, including observers of course, but also from those trained in theory/modeling who wish to broaden their knowledge to include observational techniques.
The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) is a publicly funded German research institute with a long history, including the Berlin Observatory and the Astrophysical Observatory Potsdam. The latter was the world's first observatory to emphasize explicitly the research area of astrophysics. Today, the AIP has an international reputation as a competence centre for the development of research technology in the fields of spectroscopy, robotic telescopes and E-Science. About 130 scientists work on a variety of astrophysical topics such as magnetic fields, solar and stellar physics, stellar and galactic evolution and cosmology. As a member of staff of the AIP, you will have the advantage of living very close to the Berlin metropolitan area as well as enjoying the calm, family-friendly area of Potsdam-Babelsberg for your work place and residence.
Applicants must have a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field. Salary and benefits follow the TV-L E13 scale and are commensurate with those of public service organizations in Germany. The AIP is an equal opportunity employer, values diversity, and particularly encourages women to apply. Email inquiries may be addressed to Dr. Sydney Barnes at email@example.com.
To apply, please send a pdf file including curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a statement outlining prior and current research, and contact information for three references to firstname.lastname@example.org
Applications received before 20th Aug will receive full consideration, but later ones may be considered until the position is filled.
