Job Description

The Division of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy at Caltech is offering a postdoctoral fellowship in time domain astronomy. The focus of the work will be on the modeling of astronomical variability through both advanced statistical and machine learning methods, with a particular emphasis on AGN, but also within the wider context of transient and variable astronomy with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and upcoming Widefield INfrared Transient ExploreR (WINTER) survey. There is also opportunity to work with the NSF-funded HDR Institute for Accelerated AI Algorithms for Data-Driven Discovery (A3D3) in multimessenger astronomy. Associated faculty are Professors Matthew Graham and S. George Djorgovski.

The postdoctoral fellowship position will start as soon as possible after August 1, 2022. The duration of the fellowship is up to three years: an initial one-year appointment with annual renewals contingent upon satisfactory performance and availability of funds. Fellowshop recipients will have the opportunity to propose for time on all of Caltech's astronomical facilities, include those at Palomar Observatory and at the W. M. Keck Observatory.

Electronic copies of the curriculum vitae (with email address and citizenship indicated), publications list (indicate articles which appeared in refereed journals), and statement of research experience and  interests are required. PDF submittals are preferred. The applicant is required to ensure that at least three letters of recommendation are provided.  Applicants and letter writers may send PDF submissions to Judy McClain <[email protected]>.

Caltech has implemented a mandatory vaccination policy effective October 15, 2021, requiring COVID-19 vaccinations for all employees (with Institute-approved exemptions for religious or medical contraindications only). At present, an individual is deemed “fully vaccinated” when that person has received, at least 14 days prior, either the second dose in a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine series (e.g., Pfizer or Moderna) or a single-dose COVID-19 vaccine (e.g., Johnson & Johnson). Upon eligibility, employees are required to receive the COVID-19 booster as part of the vaccine mandate. As a condition of employment, employees must submit official COVID-19 vaccine documentation. More information may be found at https://together.caltech.edu/faq/vaccination-faq.

Caltech is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
