Software Engineer
Lowell Observatory
The software engineer is a member of Lowell Observatory's Technology Group and is responsible for the continued development and support of the observatory’s instrument control, data acquisition, and user interface software used at the Discovery Channel Telescope (DCT) and Anderson Mesa sites as well as developing new software as needs arise. Additional responsibilities include DCT data archiving and some systems and networking support in conjunction with Lowell’s IT staff as appropriate. The software engineer will provide night-time support for the DCT telescope operators when needed to resolve software-related issues.
QUALIFICATIONS
• BS or MS degree in computer science or related field and 5 years of related experience
• Demonstrated ability to design effective, robust architectures for software systems
• Attention to detail, configuration management, and software testing and reliability
• Ability to organize and prioritize work and meet timelines
• Ability to work effectively in a broad-based engineering and scientific team environment
• Strong interpersonal skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Fluency with C, C++, java, and unix shell scripting
• Experience with MacOSX and linux operation and programming
ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE SKILLS
• Working knowledge of Eclipse Rich Client Platform
• Experience with software control of mechanical systems
• Familiarity with astronomy and astronomical instrumentation
• Familiarity with optical or near-IR astronomical detector control
• Working knowledge of FORTRAN programming
• Working knowledge of Windows operation and programming
• Familiarity with TCL/Tk, unix device drivers, and assembly languages
• Familiarity with systems work, networking, and TCP/IP socket communications
