Job Description

KAVLI INSTITUTE FOR ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS, PEKING UNIVERSITY

The Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (KIAA) at Peking University (PKU), Beijing, China invites applications for up to 6 postdoctoral research positions to participate in the PKU-KIAA Innovation NSFC Group (PKING) project (see http://kiaa.pku.edu.cn/pking). Led by Luis C. Ho, PKING is a long-term program funded by the National Science Foundation of China devoted to new core initiatives in astrophysics at KIAA and the PKU Department of Astronomy.  The term of the appointment is for two years, with possible extension up to four years, subject to satisfactory performance.

We seek qualified applicants with observational and theoretical expertise in one of the following topics. Applicants should state their preference for which research topic(s) they wish to be considered.

(1) Gravitational astrophysics (http://kiaa.pku.edu.cn/gravastro/): compact objects, accretion physics, relativistic astrophysics, binary black holes, and gravitational waves.  Core members are Pau Amaro-Seoane, Xian Chen, Kohei Inayoshi, Yanfei Jiang, Kejia Lee, Li-Xin Li, Zhuo Li, Fukun Liu, Lijing Shao, Rainer Spurzem, Renxin Xu, Qingjuan Yu, and Bing Zhang.  Relevant expertise includes general relativity, theoretical modeling of compact object and their radiation, stellar dynamics and simulations, hydrodynamical simulations, gravitational-wave data analysis, and pulsar timing array.

(2) Interstellar Medium (http://kiaa.pku.edu.cn/ISMgroup/): atomic hydrogen, molecular gas, dust processes, and Galactic and extragalactic star formation. Core members are Luis Ho, Gregory J. Herczeg, Yingjie Peng, Jing Wang, Ke Wang, and Ran Wang. Relevant expertise includes interferometry data reduction and analysis, optical IFU related spectral analysis, dust and stellar related SED fitting, and telescope proposal writing.

(3) Sky-Survey Science (http://kiaa.pku.edu.cn/SSSgroup/): imaging and spectroscopic surveys, time-domain astronomy, and large-data science. Core members are Subo Dong, Xiaohui Fan, Luis Ho, Linhua Jiang, Eric Peng, Xuebing Wu, and Hu Zhan. Relevant expertise includes general familiarity with any of the following areas: handling of large astronomical data sets, imaging and spectroscopic data reduction and analysis, slitless spectroscopic data reduction, general knowledge of high-redshift quasars and galaxies, galaxy dynamics, stellar population modeling, weak lensing analysis, photometric redshift estimation, general knowledge of supernovae and other transient events.

With English as its working language, KIAA is an intellectual platform for scientific exchange. KIAA is engaged in national and international theoretical and observational initiatives, development and use of facilities, and student training, pursued in partnerships with other Kavli institutes and a network of domestic and international astronomy centers. KIAA regularly sponsors thematic workshops and conferences. The KIAA and Department of Astronomy have about 25 faculty, 30 postdoctoral fellows, 60 graduate students, 120 undergraduates, and many visiting scholars.
