Job Announcement Text:

The Max-Planck-Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) in Garching (near Munich), Germany, is a world-leading institute in space- and ground-based experimental astrophysics, with leading roles in a number of large astronomical projects.

The Center for Astrochemical Studies (CAS; ) at the MPE, led by Prof. Caselli, invites applications for a

Postdoctoral position in Astrochemistry of protoplanetary disk atmospheres.

The project focusses on Astrochemistry of protoplanetary discs atmospheres and their winds and is part of the DFG Research Unit FOR2634/1 “Planet Formation Witnesses and Probes: Transition Discs” lead by Prof. Ercolano at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University. Funding is secure for the first 15 months, a further 3 years of funding is likely, but conditional to the outcome of a prolongation proposal for this grant and to performance.

The initial appointment will be for 15 months, with the possibility of an extension. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy or Astrophysics, or expect to obtain their Ph.D. in the near future.

Applicants would ideally be familiar with astrochemistry codes, experience of protoplanetary disc modelling would be of advantage, but it is not strictly required.

The funding will be available from December 2019, although a later starting date could be negotiated, but not later than March 2020.

We offer a very challenging and rewarding international field of work with state-of-the-art technology. Applicants should submit their documents (in English, and in PDF form) online (, including a CV, a list of publications, and a brief (~1 page) description of research interests, by October 31, 2019. Review will begin soon after that date, but later applications may be considered if received before the selection process is completed. Two referees should be sent to Prof. Caselli ( and Prof. Ercolano ( ) before October 31, 2019. References will be requested directly only for shortlisted candidates.

The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals.

Furthermore, the Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
