Job Announcement Text:

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is seeking a Diversity Officer to work with the Institute Director, leadership, and staff to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in our workplace. We value our diverse workforce, look to promote respect and inclusion in the workplace, and seek to be an example for others to follow.

Established in 1981, STScI is a 700+ person multi-mission operations center for NASA's flagship astronomical observatories, including the most famous observatory in history, the Hubble Space Telescope, as well as NASA’s next flagship observatories, the James Webb Space Telescope and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. We bring astronomical science to the world through internationally recognized research, news, education, and public outreach programs.

The Diversity Officer will report to the Director and work closely with the STScI Head of Human Resources, the Chief Diversity Officer of our parent organization, the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), Inc., as well as STScI leadership and staff, to craft the organization’s culture and further our strategic objective of promoting a fair, inclusive work environment and encouraging a diverse, engaged workforce.

Your core responsibility will be to advance the development, implementation and achievement of programs, initiatives, and communications in support of this strategic goal. We will look to you to evaluate past and current DEI programs and activities to assess their value and identify what is needed to move the organization to the next level of effectiveness by innovating cultural change.

Primary responsibilities of the Diversity Officer include:

• Leading the organization in developing and implementing critical initiatives that foster a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Guiding the Director and Institute leadership on yearly and long-term DEI strategies.
• Developing a communication framework for DEI initiatives, objectives and outcomes.
• Establishing and maintaining an internal auditing system for measuring and reporting progress on organizational DEI goals.
• Identifying institutional barriers to DEI and working with leadership to remove those barriers to ensure full and equitable participation for existing and future staff.
• Collaborating with Human Resources to implement effective strategies for hiring and retention of under-represented staff.
• Providing strategic direction for training and organizational development initiatives related to cultural competency across multiple axes of diversity and inclusion and other topics crafted to increase awareness and support of the organization's values.
• Engaging with internal working groups, affinity groups, self-organized groups, etc. to support grass roots DEI efforts.
• Representing STScI in establishing partnerships and affiliations with external organizations, the science community, and community stakeholders.
• Working with the AURA Chief Diversity Officer to align our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts with those of AURA.

Experience and Qualifications:

A Degree (Master’s level would be preferred but not required) in Diversity & Inclusion, Social Justice, Human Resources, Social Science, Education, or a related field. Demonstrated ability advancing a diversity, equity, and inclusion program/plan at an organizational level. Three+ years of leadership experience. Prior experience in a STEM or academic environment is helpful, but not required.
Substitution of additional relevant education or experience for stated qualifications will be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of DEI standard methodologies, state of the profession and research.
• Experience advocating and educating with respect to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Experience in the definition, implementation, improvement and/or leadership of DEI programs, including planning, training, policies, practices, etc.
• Experience with strategy development, management principles and practices, and/or organizational change.
• Ability to cultivate and develop collaborative working relationships with internal and external partners. Ability to authentically connect, negotiate, influence, and build consensus.
• Skill in analyzing, measuring, and reporting on the efficacy of DEI programs and activities.
• Ability to serve as an internal resource and consultant.
• Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for diverse backgrounds, perspectives, experiences and identities of staff. Deep level of empathy and emotional intelligence.

Note: The above details minimum requirements as well as targeted skills and experience. Research demonstrates that individuals from marginalized groups may feel that they have to meet requests for all of the skills and experience before applying. We remind you that this is not the case. We will consider other relevant qualifications when evaluating your application for this position. We strongly encourage you to apply.

TO APPLY: Applications received by January 29, 2021 will receive full consideration. Applications received after this date will be considered until the position is filled. You are requested to complete an on-line application and upload a cover letter and resume in one PDF document.
