Job Description

We are inviting applications for a postdoctoral position to work on topics related to the highest-redshift quasars and the epoch of reionization within the new group “Supermassive Black Holes and Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization” led by Dr. Eduardo Bañados at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA).

The successful candidate will develop new observational programs and tools in preparation for the first observing cycles of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The successful candidate is also expected to work on the characterization of the highest-redshift quasars and their environments using IFU data obtained with VLT/MUSE, optical and near-infrared spectroscopy obtained from 6-8m class telescopes, (sub)mm observations from ALMA and NOEMA, and eventually JWST data.  We particularly encourage the application of candidates with previous experience in analyzing HST data, ground-based imaging and (IFU) spectroscopy, and developing analysis codes.

Funds will be provided for travel, guests, computing, and publications. MPIA researchers have privileged access to the twin 8.4m Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) in Arizona, the 2.2m MPG telescope on La Silla, the Calar Alto 2.2m telescope, and the IRAM millimeter facilities including the newly upgraded NOEMA. MPIA astronomers also have access to all ESO facilities, including ALMA and the VLT.

The position will be available as early as September 2019 although the starting date is negotiable. The appointment will be for a period of three years. The remuneration is based on the German collective wage agreement for the public sector (TVöD) depending on qualification and experience in level E13/E14.

Interested candidates should send a cover letter, brief statement of research interests and achievements (max. 3 pages), curriculum vitae, and publication list in a single pdf file to [email protected]. Applicants should also arrange to have three letters of reference sent separately to the same email address.  Applications submitted by June 30, 2019 will receive full consideration.

The position will remain open until filled. For further information please contact Dr. Eduardo Bañados ([email protected]).

The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer. Women and members of historically under-represented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. MPIA supports its employees in their search for suitable childcare.
