Job Description

The Space Telescope Science Institute invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in transient astrophysics. The researcher will be part of a joint research group at STScI, which includes senior researchers Dr. Armin Rest, Dr. Lou Strolger, Dr. Suvi Gezari, and Dr. Ori Fox, and their collaborators. The position is for two years, with a third year possible contingent upon performance and continued funding. A candidate must have received their PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a related field prior to beginning their appointment.

Candidates should have interests in one or more of transient science, supernovae, gravitational waves, tidal disruption events, and cosmology. You will collaborate on a variety of ongoing observational efforts, including (but not limited to), the search for and analysis of SN explosions/progenitors, massive star evolution, gravitational wave counterparts, exotic transients, systematic discovery and characterization of tidal disruption events, SN light echoes, SN Ia cosmology, and astro-statistical methods for Big Data in time domain astronomy. Part of the time may be available for independent research or new projects in related areas. Specific expertise in template/image subtraction techniques, TESS, kilonova, SN Ia cosmology, or IR transients with JWST is a plus, but our search will not be confined by these skill sets.

Knowledge of python is required, experience in image processing and analysis and/or machine learning is a plus. The researchers will have access to data from Pan-STARRS, DECam, ATLAS, Gemini, Magellan, HST, Kepler, TESS, SDSS-V, ZTF-II, SEDMv2, Swift, and JWST. The successful applicant will benefit from career mentoring programs and close interactions with STScI and JHU research staff, as well as a stimulating work environment rich in colloquia, journal clubs, symposia, and learning opportunities related to the missions and research supported by STScI and JHU.

Proposed starting date is between March and September 2023. STScI, located on Johns Hopkins University Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, offers an excellent benefit package, competitive salaries, and a stimulating work environment. STScI’s pay is commensurate to the year of Ph.D.
