Postdoc in Experimental Cosmology

Application deadline:  9/1/2021

The Caltech experimental cosmology group seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar to advance CMB observations and technology for BICEP Array and CMB-S4.  The BICEP-Keck program is producing deep CMB polarization measurements and placing field-leading constraints on Inflationary B-mode polarization.  The newest BICEP Array stage of the program is funded and currently in implementation.  When fully fielded, BICEP Array will operate over 30,000 detectors in 6 frequency bands, deploying and observing over the next 5 years from the South Pole.  The project has begun joint observations and analysis with the 10m South Pole Telescope to improve measurements of gravitational lensing that are essential for stronger constraints on Inflationary physics.  Candidates will play a leading role in designing, testing, fielding, and analyzing data from the new BICEP Array receivers.  The highest frequency receiver will demonstrate new TKID technology being developed at Caltech/JPL for large, highly-multiplexed CMB arrays.  Candidates may choose to join local efforts towards the CMB-S4 project, including developing new detector arrays.  The successful applicant will have access to data accumulated to date from the BICEP-Keck program, as well as access to collaborative programs with the South Pole telescope covering a wide range of scientific topics.

Postdoctoral scholars will be offered a competitive salary, benefits, and a hire-on bonus, intended to help with the move.  Successful applicants may use a fraction of their time towards independent research, including either independent projects or participating in local efforts such as TIME, CIBER and SPHEREx.  Fund may be set aside to support such research upon request.  The position is intended for 3 years and may be extended by mutual agreement.

Applications should be submitted to Nancy Roth-Rappard ([email protected]) including a CV, publication list, research program and three letters of reference.  Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.  Applicants with 5 or more years of CMB research past PhD may consider applying to a staff position at Caltech under a companion ad.

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
