The High Energy Astrophysics and Applications Section at the Naval Research Laboratory invites applications for a postdoctoral position in X-ray instrumentation. The Section carries out research in X-ray and gamma-ray astrophysics, data analysis, detector development, and future mission concepts.
We are heavily involved in science with NICER, Fermi, NuSTAR and other astrophysics missions, and are leading the STROBE-X mission concept study. We also work on applications of X-ray sources and detectors for communications, navigation, and other DOD interests. The postdoc would be involved in detector development, simulations, and measurements for astrophysics and other applications.
Postdoctoral applications should be pursued through the National Research Council (NRC). NRL-NRC Associateships are awarded to persons who have held their doctorate for less than five years at the time the award is offered. Awards are for one year, with a second year extension for satisfactory accomplishments in the first year. Applicants will need to submit an original research proposal to be approved by the NRL-NRC advisor for subsequent evaluation by an external review panel chosen by the NRC. The deadline for submission to the NRC is 1 November 2018. The current award stipend is $79,720 per year, plus a $3,000 allotment for professional travel. US citizenship or US Permanent Residency is required. NRL is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Application materials can be obtained from http://sites.nationalacademies.org/pga/rap/
