Job Announcement Text:

The Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics of the University of Oslo has strong research groups within solar physics, cosmology and extragalactic astrophysics. The extragalactic astrophysics group is a relatively new group, led by associate professors Mark Dijkstra and Sijing Shen. The group is concentrating on studying the formation and evolution of galaxies in the early universe, especially through numerical simulations.

The present fellowship is for a PhD student to do a thesis project supervised by Dr. Sijing Shen. The research is focused on galaxy formation and the interactions between galaxies and the intergalactic medium. The work will involve performing simulations of galaxy formation using existing hydrodynamic codes, developing models for important physical processes which impact galaxy evolution, such as star formation, stellar radiation and supernova explosions, and/or postprocessing large sets of simulation data to compare with observations.

The student will also take advantage of interactions with the research group led by Dr. Mark Dijkstra, which specialises in modelling radiative processes and radiative transfer to connect simulations with multi-frequency observations, and the group led by Dr. Håkon Dahle, which utilises gravitational lensing to probe galaxy evolution at high redshifts.

Requirements/qualifications:

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and are expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in astrophysics, physics or computational science. Previous experience on astrophysical hydrodynamic simulations using high performance computing (HPC) facilities will be considered as an asset.

Candidates without a Master’s degree have until 30 June, 2017 to complete the final exam.

A good command of English is required.

The application must include:

Application letter
CV (summarizing education, positions and academic work - scientific publications)
Copies of educational certificates, transcript of records and letters of recommendation
Documentation of English proficiency
List of publications and academic work that the applicant wishes to be considered by the evaluation committee
Names and contact details of 2-3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and telephone number)
Foreign applicants are advised to attach an explanation of their University’s grading system. Please remember that all documents should be in English or a Scandinavian language.

In accordance with the University of Oslo’s equal opportunities policy, we invite applications from all interested individuals regardless of gender or ethnicity. UiO has an agreement for all employees, aiming to secure rights to research results a.o.
