Job Description

The Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU) invites applications for the Kavli IPMU postdoctoral fellowship program. We intend to appoint several positions in astrophysics and cosmology with 3-year terms.

The mission of Kavli IPMU is to explore fundamental laws of the Universe from a synergistic perspective of mathematics, physics, and astronomy. Kavli IPMU is a leading institute of the ongoing Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) imaging survey (https://hsc.mtk.nao.ac.jp/ssp/) and the upcoming Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) survey (https://pfs.ipmu.jp/) with the 8.2m Subaru Telescope. Faculty members at Kavli IPMU are actively involved in experiments such as the Vera Rubin Observatory LSST, Simons Observatory, CMB-S4, and the LiteBIRD satellite mission.

Topics of investigation at Kavli IPMU include theoretical and observational cosmology, galaxy evolution, optical transients (supernova), numerical simulations, quasar studies, high-energy astrophysics, and multi-messenger astronomy. Large computing resources are available at Kavli IPMU and on the national level. Fellows have access to proprietary-period data of Subaru HSC and PFS. Fellows can apply for observing time on facilities available through the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), including the 8.2m Subaru Telescope, ALMA, Keck and Gemini Telescopes through the Subaru Time Exchange program. Kavli IPMU provides a stimulating and supportive environment for junior scientists to grow with its mentorship program, large group of postdoctoral scholars, and interdisciplinary research opportunities with scientists from particle physics and mathematics.

The fellowship provides a startup research allowance and the flexibility to work abroad for up to three months per year. Fellows are encouraged to organize seminars, workshops, and conferences that are sponsored by Kavli IPMU. Equity, diversity, and inclusion are strongly supported at Kavli IPMU. We particularly encourage applicants from groups that are underrepresented in astrophysics and cosmology, such as women and gender minorities, and from diverse cultural backgrounds. Fellows can access on-site childcare and are entitled to paid parental leave. A support team is available to the fellows and their families to facilitate everyday living in Japan.

The application should include a CV, research statement, publication list, and at least three letters of recommendation. They should be uploaded through AcademicJobsOnline at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/19286/apply.

The search is open until filled, but for full consideration please submit the application and letters by Dec 1, 2021.
