McDonald Observatory at the University of Texas at Austin is accepting applications for a postdoctoral position working with Dr. Cynthia Froning and collaborators in the area of observational stellar and exoplanet astrophysics. The postdoc hire will work as part of the Mega-MUSCLES team conducting a multiwavelength survey of the energetic radiation environment around late type stars and the effects of high energy emission on exoplanet atomospheric structure and habitability. Experience in one or more areas of ultraviolet/optical spectroscopy, research on cool star chromospheres and/or flaring activity, or studies of exoplanet atmospheric physics is preferred but not required.
The postdoc scientist will also have research access to the observing facilities of McDonald Observatory, including the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope, the 2.7-m Harlan J. Smith Telescope, the 2.1-m Otto Struve Telescope, and the 0.8-m wide-field imaging telescope. McDonald Observatory is also a Science Collaboration Institution of the Los Cumbres Observatory with guaranteed access to their global observatory network. In addition, the facilities of the Texas Advanced Computing Center are available.
The nominal start date is September 1, 2018, but an earlier date may be considered based on availability of suitable candidates. The initial appointment will be for one year with the expectation of renewal for a second and third year following satisfactory research performance. Candidates are expected to hold a Ph.D. upon arrival and will reside in Austin, TX. UT is an Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
