Assistant or Associate Professor/Deputy Director of the GMU Observatory (Term)

The George Mason University Department of Physics and Astronomy, within the College of Science, invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a Term Faculty Assistant or Associate Professor / Deputy Director for the GMU Observatory position. It is anticipated that the selected finalist will join the department on August 25, 2020.

Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of this non-tenure-track position include:

• Teaching lecture and lab courses in astronomy and physics at varying levels, typically four courses in each of the fall and spring semesters;
• Assisting the Executive Director of the GMU Observatory in managing the campus observatory;
• Deputy Director duties will include supporting operations and maintenance of the observatory; management of public nights, observatory teaching and learning assistants, and the Friends of the Observatory student club; serving as a liaison with the Northern Virginia Astronomy Club; and
• Engaging in departmental service as requested by the Chair to include routine administrative duties and student advising/mentoring.

Required Qualifications:

• A minimum of a doctoral degree/Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or in a relevant field at the time of hire;
• An established record of effective teaching and mentoring;
• Proven ability to use course content management software (e.g. Blackboard) and other, instructional-related software (e.g. MS PowerPoint and Excel) for the delivery of course content is further required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Significant prior experience operating an observatory.
