Job Description

The Millimeter and Submillimeter Astronomy Department of the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Radioastronomie (MPIfR) in Bonn, Germany, is seeking highly qualified postdoctoral researchers, ideally with demonstrated experience in (sub)mm interferometry and/or single-dish observations of star forming regions and the dense interstellar medium.

Research in the department also covers the physics and chemistry of diffuse interstellar clouds and studies of evolved stars and applications in these areas are also strongly encouraged.
There will be a wide range of research opportunities for the applicants. Mayor areas include

(i) work on the exploitation and follow-ups of Galactic Plane surveys such as ATLASGAL (The APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy) and SEDIGISM (Structure, excitation, and dynamics of the inner Galactic interstellar medium);
(ii) the planning and observation of complementary large scale surveys in lines and continuum with APEX;
(iii) interferometric follow-ups of large source samples and cloud complexes with ALMA, NOEMA and the JVLA.

The MPIfR offers a vibrant research environment with strong expertise in star formation and interferometry.
The institute is the leading radioastronomical institute in Germany, operates the 100-m radio telescope at Effelsberg, which is a key element of the European VLBI Network, holds a 55% share of the observing time with the APEX telescope in Chile and offers access to the IRAM instruments and SOFIA.

Applicants must have a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field. Interested candidates should send application materials including curriculum vitae, list of publications, a two-page summary of relevant experience and plans, and the names of three professional referees who have been asked by the applicant to be willing to submit letters of recommendation by email to Prof. Karl Menten: [email protected].

Initial review of applicants will begin on October 1, 2020; however, applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.

The employment is initially for a period of 2 years with a possibility of extension.
Salaries are paid at German civil service rates according to TvÖD 13 or 14 (gross annual pre-tax income including health insurance contributions and social security currently in the range 40.000 EUR to 50.000 EUR, depending on experience).
