Job Description

The Department of Physics at Villanova University invites applications for a postdoctoral position in black hole accretion and high-energy astrophysics with Prof. Joey Neilsen. The successful candidate will work on topics broadly related to X-ray spectral variability of accreting black holes, including but not limited to: accretion disk winds, spectroscopy, and timing around stellar mass black holes, or flaring variability around Sagittarius A*. Projects will draw on new and archival observations from Chandra, NuSTAR, and NICER, but applicants with theoretical expertise in these areas are also encouraged to apply. Experience with X-ray observations, especially high-resolution spectroscopy, is especially desirable.

The Villanova Physics Department is dedicated to excellence in teaching and research, and we recognize the importance of involving our undergraduates in cutting-edge research. We are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute in such an atmosphere. The successful candidate will (a) take advantage of opportunities to mentor students in research and in career development and (b) gain teaching experience (likely one lab course per semester, more if desired). The position is planned for two years, with a possible extension for a third year contingent on the availability of funding.

For full consideration, applications should be submitted to https://jobs.villanova.edu/postings/14693 by October 15, and must include a cover letter, a 3-page statement describing the applicant's research interests, a CV with publication list, and the names and contact information for three references who will be contacted via email to submit confidential letters of recommendation when the application is submitted. Applications will be reviewed by November 15; start date is on or before January 14, 2019. For more information, please feel free to email Joey Neilsen at [email protected].
