We are seeking ambitious, highly-qualified postdoctoral researchers to work in the “Multi-scale Star Formation” Research Group led by Dr. Diederik Kruijssen at the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut of the Zentrum für Astronomie at Heidelberg University (ARI/ZAH). The offered position is funded by the ERC grant “MUSTANG”, and the group operates on the interface between observations (e.g. using ALMA and MUSE), theory, and numerical simulations of star formation and feedback during galaxy formation and evolution.
Successful candidates will join an active research team and will be expected to play a leading role in answering key open questions in the area of star formation, molecular cloud evolution, and galactic dynamics. One of the main goals of this postdoctoral position is to carry out state-of-the-art simulations of molecular cloud evolution and star formation near galactic centres, initially focussing on the Central Molecular Zone of the Milky Way, and to compare the results to the latest observations. We particularly invite applications from candidates with experience in numerical simulations of cloud-scale star formation, ISM physics, feedback, and galactic dynamics.
Successful candidates will have access to excellent supercomputing facilities. Heidelberg is one of the major astronomy hubs in Europe and provides a vibrant and leading research environment. The group has strong collaborative ties with the other groups at the ZAH, as well as the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS).
Applicants should have a PhD in astronomy or a related field and a solid background in (a subset of) the aforementioned areas. The appointment will be for an initial period of 2 years with likely extensions up to 4 years, subject to performance. The starting date is expected to be in summer 2017 at the latest, but earlier starting dates are encouraged (though no earlier than January 1, 2018). The position is funded by the European Research Council according to the German public service scale (TV-L E13). Generous funds will be provided for travel, guests, computing, and publications.
Interested candidates should apply by sending a single PDF file containing a cover/motivation letter, CV, publication list, and a brief (max. 3 page) summary of previous research and future plans to email@example.com. Applicants should also arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to the same email address. Applications and letters must be sent by November 4, 2017 to receive full consideration. For further information please contact Dr. Diederik Kruijssen, in the first instance by email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
