The Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian (CfA) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position with Dr. V. Ashley Villar in the field of time-domain astrophysics, including the studies of multi-messenger astrophysics, exotic core-collapse supernovae, and machine learning methods for time series analysis. A PhD in Physics, Astronomy, or a closely related field is required.
The position will entail work on a variety of cutting-edge research in time-domain astrophysics, including the development and implementation of machine learning, statistical and data-driven algorithms to study exotic transient phenomena. The successful candidate will lead and participate in studies of exotic extragalactic transients across the electromagnetic spectrum. Applicants with previous experience in ML or optical observations of transients are especially encouraged to apply.
The successful applicant will have access to Harvard resources including CfA-allocated observing time on the MMT in Arizona and the Magellan Telescopes in Chile, as well as the access to the Harvard Cannon compute cluster.
Applications must be submitted electronically and include a single PDF file containing a CV, publications list, and statement of research interests. In addition, please request three reference letters be sent to [email protected].
Applications received before February 1, 2024, will receive full consideration. All Harvard research appointments are one year term appointments with the possibility of renewal for a further two years, depending on performance and funding. The nominal starting date will be September 1, 2024, but an earlier or later start is negotiable.
Members of groups which are traditionally underrepresented in astrophysics are strongly encouraged to apply.
