Job Description

Postdoctoral position at the Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy

The Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy (CGWA) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley invites applications for a postdoctoral position at the interface between Machine Learning, Gravitational Wave Astronomy, and Time-Domain Astrophysics.

The CGWA is a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and a founding member of the Transient Optical Robotic Observatory of the South collaboration (TOROS, toros.utrgv.edu). TOROS is actively participating in the electromagnetic follow-up of gravitational wave candidates detected by aLIGO and Advanced VIRGO, with access to several observing facilities in both hemispheres such as GTC, HET, Gemini and McDonald Observatory.

Applicants should have a strong interest in leading research efforts in the electromagnetic follow-up of gravitational wave event triggers from advanced detectors and in the study of astrophysical transients. The postdoc will also have ample opportunity to assist in the supervision of several undergraduate and graduate students involved in the CGWA Time Domain Astronomy group.

We seek an ambitious young scientist with a PhD in physics, astrophysics or astronomy who is well versed in optical/near-infrared photometry (including the use of standard astronomical software packages) and has experience programming in Python. Some experience in optical/near-infrared spectroscopy is also desirable.

Appointments are for one year, with renewal for a second and third year contingent upon satisfactory progress and funding status. The anticipated starting date is Summer/Fall 2017. Interested candidates should apply through the following electronic link:

Please also submit electronically a curriculum vitae, publication list, statement of research plans, to Mario Diaz [email protected], and arrange for two letters of recommendation to be sent to the same email address.

Review of applications will start March 20, 2017 and continue until position is filled.
