Job Description

The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) is offering 3 postgraduate scholarships to work on the development of optical/near infrared microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) for use in astronomy.  The project, which will be in an entirely new group, is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and is in collaboration with the University of Oxford, the Space Research Organisation of the Netherlands (SRON), Trinity College Dublin and Maynooth University. Funding is available for 4 years starting in November 2016 (the start date is negotiable) and includes a stipend, postgraduate university fees and provision for conference and workshop participation.

The students will work on different aspects of the project including the design and fabrication of the detectors, as well as a new multiplex readout system using SKA technology.

A primary degree in physics, computer science, astronomy or a related field is required. Excellent programming skills are beneficial.

Interested students are encouraged to send a brief statement of their research interests, a curriculum vitae, and to arrange for 2 letters of recommendation to be sent directly to Ms Eileen Flood, ([email protected]) from whom further information can be obtained. Detailed inquiries can be made to Prof Tom Ray ([email protected]). The deadline for applications, including receipt of letters of recommendation, is September 30th 2016.
