Job Description

Subaru Telescope, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) is inviting applications for the position of project research fellow (Subaru Fellow). Subaru Telescope operates the Subaru telescope for open use observations and is also active in the research and development for its future systems (http://www.subarutelescope.org/). We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow who can actively pursue observational research and/or instrumental development using the Subaru telescope. The applicant must have a PhD degree as of 31 March 2019, or is expected to have it by the starting date of your employment. It should be described if the applicant is expected to have a PhD degree by the starting date of your employment.

Successful applicants are expected to actively collaborate with the staff members using not only the Subaru telescope, but also Keck telescopes, Gemini telescopes, and others to enhance scientific activities at the observatory. In addition, they are expected to support a part of open use observations at the Subaru telescope (up to 50% of their time), including duties at the top of MaunaKea (4200 m in elevation). Applicants should describe not only plans of their own research, but also plans for possible collaborations and supporting roles at the observatory.

The term starts at 1 April 2019 or later, and is for three years, subject to annual review. At the end of the contract term, there is the possibility of extending the contract up to two years, based on a review. If the applicant had been the project research fellow of NAOJ or the Researcher (Part-time Contract Employee) before, then the term may be adjusted so that the total length of employment does not exceed five years.

Benefit: Successful applicants will be hired through RCUH (Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii ). Expense to move to Hawaii will be covered by the Subaru telescope based on RCUH's guideline. For a resident outside the state of Hawaii, monthly allowance for Hilo, Hawaii will be paid in addition to the base salary of 350,000 JPY. Annual research funds of 500,000 JPY will be also provided. Note that the salary and the monthly allowance will be paid in USD with the fixed exchange rate of 1 USD = 100 JYEN.
