Postdoctoral Position in Theoretical Extragalactic Astrophysics
Job Summary
Job Description
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position at the University of Colorado Boulder, starting around August/September 2020, to work with Prof. Julie Comerford on numerical and theoretical studies of galaxy mergers. The successful applicant will contribute to a research program on (1) using simulated galaxy mergers to create mock images to inform better observational identifications of mergers, and/or (2) measuring the galaxy merger rate, by using hydrodynamics simulations to determine cosmological populations of mergers as well as merger timescales. This project will ultimately combine the galaxy merger rate with constraints on the gravitational wave background measured by pulsar timing arrays, in order to constrain supermassive black hole binary stalling timescales. New ideas and research proposals in the fields of galaxy mergers and binary supermassive black holes are also encouraged.
Experience with hydrodynamics simulations of galaxy evolution is preferred. Applicants should have a PhD in astronomy or physics on arrival. The appointment will be for an initial period of two years, with renewal for a third year contingent upon satisfactory progress. The position includes a competitive salary, research/travel funds, and access to supercomputing facilities.
To apply, email [email protected] a single PDF containing:
- Cover letter
- CV, including list of publications
- Brief (up to 3 page) research statement of your scientific interests and how you would specifically contribute to the research program on galaxy mergers
Also arrange for 3 letters of reference to be emailed as PDFs. Complete applications received by November 18, 2019, will receive full consideration.
