Shanghai Astronomical Observatory (SHAO) is seeking to fill several faculty positions on Astrophysics, Astronomical Optical Technology, and VLBI and its applications. Observers, theorists, and instrumentalists are all encouraged to apply.
Research fields of Astrophysics at SHAO include black hole astrophysics and AGN, galaxy formation and evolution, cosmology, star formation, the structure and evolution of the Milky Way, high-energy astrophysics, radio astrophysics (especially SKA, sub-millimeter VLBI science), numerical astrophysics, gravitational wave astrophysics, exoplanets, and astrostatistics. SHAO employs a mix of Chinese and international astrophysicists, including more than 50 faculty members, 20 postdocs, and 100 PhD students. SHAO belongs to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which provides a diverse setting and research facilities, such as LAMOST, FAST etc. The institute also possesses its own facilities such as the 65-m Tianma radio telescope and excellent computational facilities. SHAO is deeply involved in SKA project, especially is pushing to construct the China SKA Regional Centre, and leading the pre-study of the key SKA science on the detection of Epoch of Reionization in China. SHAO is the host institute of one of the four Chinese Space Station Telescope (CSST) science centers, and leading the science developments of the two instruments, MCI and IFS, on board of CSST. SHAO is also leading the study of the Earth 2.0 space mission aiming at detecting habitable Earth-like planets around solar type stars. SHAO is developing the projects on Ultraviolet, Infrared, Interferometry, ngEHT and Space Low Frequency Radio Observatory. Members of the institute are also actively involved in other various international and domestic projects such as EHT, HUBS, LHAASO, LAMOST, LAGER/CIDER, HXMT, eXTP, JCMT, KAGRA, Taiji and LISA.
2.Astronomical Optical Technology
As one of the primary divisions of SHAO, the Division of Science and Technology for Optical Astronomy (DSTOA) is responsible for astronomical optical technique development. In addition to the contracture of astronomical optical telescopes and astronomical optical interferometry technique, the activities of DSTOA encompass optical and infrared instrumentation technique, design and operation of optical survey systems, digitalized photography technique, etc. Recently, DSTOA carried out scientific driven research on Astronomical Optical Technology. DSTOA has also participated in the development of two payload "Multi-Channel Imagers" and "Integral Field Spectrometers" on CSST, and is taking the lead in promoting the "Earth 2.0" exoplanet detection satellite project.
Presently DSTOA has 35 staff members including 15 senior engineers specializing on optics, mechanics, electronics, control software and CCD cameras. We are now seeking optical astronomers and engineers to fill several faculty positions focusing on the frontiers and key scientific research of the space and ground based optical telescopes and instrumentations.
3.VLBI and its applications
SHAO is propelling the Lunar-earth experiment and the Low Frequency space VLBI project. We are now seeking radio astronomers and engineers to fill several faculty positions focusing on the frontiers and key scientific research of the Low Frequency space VLBI. Suitable candidates of all nationalities with experience in space science and technology, radio astronomy or the related fields are welcomed to apply. The candidate should be familiar with space electronic technology or space system.
- VLBI technique and its application in astrometry and geodesy
The successful candidate will be expected to provide support of regular astrometric/geodetic VLBI scheduling and data processing, and work on research projects related to absolute radio astrometry for densification of celestial reference frames, or broadband delay measurements for the new generation geodetic VLBI system. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in space geodesy, radio astronomy or closely related field, especially in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). Research experience in the fields of astrometric/geodetic VLBI, and experience in VLBI data reduction, will be advantageous.
Application: Applicants must possess a Ph.D. degree and have a demonstrated record of outstanding research, along with a strong commitment to contribute to graduate education (but no teaching commitment is required). Active researchers of all nationalities are encouraged to apply. The salary and start-up grant will be highly competitive.
