Job Description

The Department of Astronomy (http://astro.ustc.edu.cn/) at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) invites applications for 2-4 postdoctoral positions to start around the fall of 2018 (the start date is negotiable). Successful applicants will work with Prof. Junxian Wang (http://staff.ustc.edu.cn/~jxw/) and Prof. Yongquan Xue (http://staff.ustc.edu.cn/~xuey/) primarily on scientific investigations based on the Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS; http://pfs.ipmu.jp/) project, with full access to the PFS survey data that will start to flood in around 2019. In addition to the commitment to the PFS project, successful applicants are also strongly encouraged to work on a range of exciting topics related to active galactic nuclei, galaxy formation and evolution, co-evolution of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies, etc.

USTC is among the top-ranked universities in China and is committed to provide strong support to postdoctoral researchers. The annual salary for the first two years will be 200,000 RMB if a successful applicant holds a PhD from an institution ranked among top 100 globally in the QS world university rankings. Regular postdocs will receive an annual salary of 120,000 RMB at minimum, up to 170,000 RMB. The university also provides an additional 1,000RMB per month housing allowance and benefits on children daycare. All successful applicants are encouraged to apply for the Youth Innovation Research Fund supported by USTC (with the amount of 100,000 – 120,000 RMB and the supporting rate of about 50%). More information can be found at (http://staff.ustc.edu.cn/~yifucai/PageFrame/openpositions/adpostdocpfs.html).

Applicants of all nationalities are welcome, and are expected to have received a Ph.D. in astronomy or a related discipline before commencing the position. Successful applicants are expected to work with Prof. Junxian Wang and/or Prof. Yongquan Xue as stated above. The appointment is awarded for two years and could be extended for up to 6 additional years (with a title of non-tenure research associate professor) contingent on performance and funding. Promotions to tenure positions (full professor, associate professor) are also expected for candidates with outstanding performance.

To apply, applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, list of publications, statement of research interests, and arrange for at least three reference letters to be sent to Dr. Yongquan Xue and/or Dr. Junxian Wang with a subject as "PFS Postdoc Positions at USTC/Your Name" by email ([email protected], [email protected]) by March 15, 2018. The positions are open until filled, but materials should arrive by the deadline to ensure full consideration. For further inquiry, please reach [email protected] or (+86)-551-63606803.
