Job Description

The Department of Physics at Villanova University invites applications for up to two postdoctoral positions in black hole accretion and high-energy astrophysics with Prof. Joey Neilsen. Successful candidates will work on topics broadly related to X-ray spectral variability of accreting black holes, with one position to focus on stellar mass black holes and one to focus on supermassive black holes, especially Event Horizon Telescope targets like M87 and Sgr A*. Projects will draw on new and archival observations from Chandra, NuSTAR, and NICER; experience with X-ray observations is desirable but applicants with theoretical expertise are also encouraged to apply.

The Villanova Physics Department is dedicated to excellence in teaching and research, and we recognize the importance of involving our undergraduates in cutting-edge research. We are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute in such an atmosphere. Successful candidates will take advantage of opportunities to mentor students in research and in career development. Postdoctoral researchers in the Physics Department also have the opportunity to gain paid teaching experience in college classrooms. The positions are planned for two years, with a possible extension for a third year contingent on the availability of funding.

Review of applications will begin on 11/6 and will continue until the positions are filled. Applications should be submitted to https://jobs.villanova.edu/postings/21504 with a cover letter, a 3-page statement of research interests, and a CV with publication list. Applications must include contact information for 3 references who will be contacted via email to submit confidential letters of recommendation when the application is submitted. Start dates are flexible, but candidates interested in M87/Sgr A* who are open to starting in early 2022 are especially encouraged to apply. For more information, please feel free to email Joey Neilsen at [email protected].
