Job Description

We encourage applications for our Sommers-Bausch Observatory Manager! This position maintains & improves observing, teaching and computing facilities utilizing technical expertise in one of two main teaching labs of the Astrophysical & Planetary Sciences department. This position requires unique expertise to be able to maintain and repair modern research-quality telescopes, a roof-mounted Heliostat, various smaller portable telescopes, and associated accessories. This person will instruct users how to operate each, maintain the physical building and supervise student observatory staff. This person will be on-call for telescope support/repair as needed.

Required: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute. 1+ yrs of lab experience in an observatory/similar environment.

Needed: Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with a variety of individuals. Proven ability to work independently & assume responsibility for initiating and completing critical functions in the management of educational programs. Proven leadership ability. Proficient computer knowledge and skills w/ Adobe Acrobat & MS Office. Ability to work optimally in a team and other collaborative work situations.

Preferred: 3 yrs of specialized lab experience in an observatory/similar environment. Knowledge of engineering techniques related to equipment modification & maintenance; machine shop-related skills; observational astronomy techniques & procedures. Expertise in Windows/Unix/Linux systems. Technical knowledge of a modern observatory. Outstanding expertise to maintain and repair modern research-quality telescopes.
