Post Doctoral Researcher – Physics And Astronomy

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Delaware is soliciting applications for a postdoctoral position within the group led by Prof. Federica Bianco and carry out research on data-driven astrophysical transients in large surveys. The research focus will be on the death and death throes of massive stars, leveraging machine learning methods for classification, characterization, and insight into physical properties in large survey data, with particular emphasis on the development of methodological applications for the LSST survey.

The successful applicant will be encouraged to pursue independent research interests on related research topics.  They will have the opportunity to interact closely with many collaborators (including the group of Prof. Stan Owocki at UD and the members of the LSST Transients and Variable Stars Science Collaborations and other LSST Science Collaborations), and will benefit from Prof. Bianco’s close connection with the newly created UD Data Science Institute.

Applicants should have a PhD in astrophysics, physics, or a discipline relevant to data-driven inference. Experience with Big Data and/or Machine Learning is required.  The appointment is for two years; renewal for a third year is subject to performance and availability of funds. The starting date will be on or before Sep 1, 2019.
