Job Description

The Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing (CAS) at Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia seeks applications for a Visiting Research Fellowship. This program offers women and gender diverse people the opportunity to visit CAS and interact with researchers and graduate students at Swinburne. The fellowship is restricted to researchers in the career range of 4-15 years from their PhD, after accounting for career interruptions.

  • Develop career opportunities for early & mid-career researchers
  • Further improve the research environment in CAS
  • Foster mentoring relationships

Eligibility
The Swinburne Visiting Fellow program is open to women, transgender men and nonbinary researchers who have at least 4 years from the time of the award of their PhD, and fewer that 15 years from their PhD at the time of undertaking the visit. Note that the time since PhD can be extended to account for any career interruptions. In this event, please include a statement with the application materials. The research must overlap with the interests of at least one faculty member of CAS, who will be identified in the application.

What is expected of the Visiting Fellow
The Visiting Fellow will be expected to stay at CAS for a minimum of 4 weeks. Longer stays are encouraged, subject to funding availability. The Fellow will give a colloquium on their research and a second presentation to CAS research students on a topic that is suitable. The Fellow is expected to engage with the research group of their identified collaborator regularly during the visit.

The second presentation, and any engagement with CAS students, is open for the Visiting Fellow to interpret and should be discussed in the proposal. This presentation could be research based or alternatively be about career progression and or diversity & inclusion in astronomy. Please contact us if you have questions about this.

Funding
The nominal funding is up to $12k AUD, which is sufficient to cover typical international airfare and accommodation for the duration of the fellowship. Additional funding for childcare may be available on a needs basis, subject to funding availability.

Note that the dates of travel must be arranged by the end of 2022. The visit can take place in 2023, however tickets and accommodation must be arranged by end-of-year 2022.
