Job Description

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Ball State University invites applications for a tenured, senior faculty position. The occupant will also serve as Department Chairperson for a three-year, renewable term beginning July 1, 2020. The successful candidate will possess a continuing commitment to a well-established research agenda, to effective undergraduate teaching, and to public service.

 As a Department Chair, the candidate will provide leadership for a department with eight full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty members. The department’s facilities include the state-of-the-art Charles W. Brown Planetarium, which has more than 20,000 visitors per year and remains a vital contributor to Ball State University’s commitment to community engagement. The successful candidate will have a specialty in either physics or astronomy. Teaching assignments may include introductory courses as well as upper-division courses.

Minimum qualifications:  Ph.D. in Physics and Astronomy or terminal degree in appropriate area, from an accredited institution.  Five years of tenure-line faculty teaching and research experience.        

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred qualifications: Three years of academic department, college or university administrative experience; experience as chairperson of an academic department or assistant/associate dean of a college; substantial record of research and publication in own area (s) of specialization; demonstrated excellence in teaching.
