Job Description

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral appointment in the Cosmology and Structure Formation group of the Faculty of Physics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet (LMU-Munich). The successful applicant will be expected to actively engage in radio astronomy studies using the new MeerKAT facility, an SKA precursor array in South Africa. A particular focus of the work will be the development and application of a toolkit to enable the multi-wavelength study of radio galaxies and the extraction of physical properties of the host galaxies—such as photometric redshifts and constraints on the stellar populations—from broad band photometric surveys such as DES, LSST and Euclid. The new team member will join the broader D-MeerKAT program, which currently involves ten other German universities and two Max Planck institutes. In addition, the new group member could become involved in Euclid and LSST. Members of our group are also focused on the South Pole Telescope surveys (SPT-SZ, SPTpol and SPT-3G), preparations for the eROSITA X-ray survey (launch end of 2018) and cluster and galaxies studies with the DES.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in astronomy or physics. The two year position is available as of 1. July, 2018, but the start date is flexible. This is a research position at the German E13 salary scale, and it is open to all qualified individuals, regardless of nationality. German language skills are not required but would be a benefit. The initial two year appointment will have the possibility of extension, pending good research progress and availability of funding. Please send a CV, a publication list, and a research statement. In addition, please arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent to Prof Mohr. Applications should be received by March 15, 2018.
