Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Center for Computational Astrophysics (CCA), led by David Spergel, aims to become a focal point for computational astrophysics around the world and plans to develop the computational methods and tools needed for calculations, simulations and analyses in astrophysics. In steady state, CCA will be comprised of up to 50–60 researchers.

Applications are invited for postdoctoral research positions as Flatiron Research Fellows at the CCA. Flatiron Research Fellows are generally two year-appointments, and may be renewed for a third year, contingent on performance. CCA research groups in 2018 will be in the following areas and include the following senior scientists: Astronomical Data (David Hogg); Compact Objects (Yuri Levin); Galaxy Formation (Greg Bryan & Rachel Somerville); Gravitational Wave Astronomy (Will Farr); and Cosmology X Data Science (Shirley Ho & David Spergel). A description of the research groups and the full CCA research team can be found at https://www.simonsfoundation.org/flatiron/center-for-computational-astro....

The CCA is looking for highly motivated individuals with a strong background in one of the following fields: computer science, machine learning and statistics with an interest in astrophysics cosmology and/or large datasets. Flatiron Research Fellows in ML/Stat will develop novel computational and inferential approaches for analysis of large datasets or generation of simulations including but not limited to the field of astrophysics.  The fellows will work on research programs supervised by the research scientists, group leaders and the director. Flatiron Research Fellows are encouraged to carry out an independent research program, collaborate with other Flatiron members (including all centers within the Flatiron Institute: Center for Computational Astrophysics, Center for Computational Biology and Center for Computational Quantum Physics; https://www.simonsfoundation.org/flatiron/), and participate in the vibrant activities of the Institute such as workshops and seminars, and mentor students.
