Job Announcement Text:

The Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) and the Center for Astronomy (ZAH) at Heidelberg University are seeking candidates to fill a postdoctoral research position to work on modeling the epoch of reionization within the recently-established Cluster of Excellence "STRUCTURES". The successful candidate will join the Galaxies and Cosmology Theory Group at MPIA led by Dr. Annalisa Pillepich and the teams of Prof. Ralf Klessen, Dr. Simon Glover, and Dr. Dylan Nelson at ZAH.

The STRUCTURES Cluster of Excellence is a multi-disciplinary endeavor aiming at understanding the emergence, role, and detection of structure in a broad range of natural phenomena, from subatomic particles to cosmology, and from fundamental quantum physics to neuroscience. Within this context, the groups at MPIA and ZAH plan to uncover the details of structure and galaxy formation during the epoch of cosmic reionization.

The successful candidate is expected to design, carry out, and analyze high-resolution multi-physics simulations with the goal of better understanding the epoch of reionization and the processes that govern early galaxy formation. Previous experience in high-performance computing, in conducting hydrodynamical cosmological simulations, in analyzing large data sets, in writing/modifying multi-purpose codes like Arepo, and/or in star and galaxy formation modeling in general is desired.

Applicants should have a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field. The appointment will be for an initial period of two years with a likely extension to a total of three years. The postdoctoral researcher will be formally employed by the STRUCTURES Cluster at Heidelberg University, and will spend his/her time between MPIA and ZAH. The position is paid according to the German system of state employees and comes with full benefits together with a generous research and travel budget.

To receive full consideration, interested candidates should submit a curriculum vitae, publication list, and a brief statement of research interests by December 15, 2020, and arrange for three letters of reference to be provided separately by the same date.

All application material and references letters need to be sent to the following email address: [email protected]
