Job Description

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPA) in Garching near Munich, Germany. The successful candidate will join the newly founded "Max Planck Research Group" led by Max Gronke broadly focusing on multiphase gas dynamics and its connection to observations. Fields of interest include small-scale gas physics (e.g., in the circumgalactic medium and galactic winds) and radiative transfer problems (in particular Lyman-alpha & ionizing photon escape and its impact on the surrounding medium). We invite applicants with interests and expertise in any of these or related areas.

The candidate will have access to computing resources dedicated to the MPRG, in addition to general computing facilities at the MPA. The position comes with generous funds for personal equipment and travel. Initial appointment is for 2 years with an extension for a 3rd year likely, contingent on performance. The MPA and the neighboring institutes in Garching/Munich host a strong research program in astrophysics and provide a stimulating environment.

The starting date is flexible, from autumn 2021 to spring 2022. Full consideration will be given to applications received by December 20, 2020. Late applications will be accepted until the post is filled.

Interested candidates are invited to apply by submitting a brief cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a publication list, a statement of their scientific experience and interests via

https://wwwmpa.mpa-garching.mpg.de/machform/view.php?id=46741.

The candidates should also arrange for 2-3 letters of reference to be uploaded via

https://wwwmpa.mpa-garching.mpg.de/machform/view.php?id=47423

by December 25, 2020.

The MPA is actively committed to equal opportunity in employment and candidates from traditionally under-represented backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.
