Job Description

Postdoctoral Research Scholar with the Experiment to Detect the Global EoR Signature
School of Earth and Space Exploration
Arizona State University

We invite applications for a postdoctoral research scholar to conduct research with the Experiment to Detect the Global EoR Signature (EDGES).  We encourage applications from a diverse range of candidates who may contribute to the project through instrument development, data analysis, and/or astrophysical interpretation of observations.  The full-time, fiscal year position includes an annual stipend of $64,000 with health benefits. A relocation allowance will be provided.

The EDGES team is embarking on the development of the next generation of the instrument, with a focus on reducing systematic effects that are potential limiting factors in redshifted 21cm global measurements of cosmic dawn.  Research questions that we anticipate addressing include the development and verification of an automated radio-frequency calibration network, improvements to receiver performance, wideband antenna designs, and ground plane configurations to minimize chromatic beam effects.   We also anticipate investigating approaches for optimal parameter estimation using multiple datasets and evidence-based model selection.

Essential duties of the position: The successful applicant will conduct original research, document results and write journal articles, and present at scientific meetings.

Minimum Qualifications: (1) Ph.D. in a relevant field by the time of appointment, but no earlier than five years before the start date, (2) demonstrated record of research accomplishment in a related field.

Desired Qualifications: (1) Relevant experience in radio instrumentation and observations, signal processing, statistical data analysis, and/or software development, (2) a record of prior achievement and experience that shows the applicant’s potential to accomplish research objectives, and (3) evidence of strong verbal and written communication skills.
